The Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS), located in Bucaramanga, Colombia. It is a public and official educational institution. Dr. Luis Villar is the director of the UIS Epidemiology Clinical Research Center and is also the director of the AEDES Network. It is a joint effort of researchers from different academic institutions, research centers, and a consortium to work on of Dengue and other arboviruses (CHIK and Zika). The Dr Villar’s team will lead the study in association with Dr. Ricardo Ortiz MD, Gynecologist, Director of Gynecology and Obstetrics Deparment at Hospital Local del Norte (HLN) and professor at the Universidad Autónoma de Bucaramanga (UNAB). Our team include physicians, nurses and microbiologists with training and experience in epidemiological and clinical studies, to clinical evaluation, to obtain samples and to collect data with a high quality performance. We also have a call center with experience to a regular contact with the participants of the studies (by phone or home visit). We also have experience in laboratory tests: molecular biology including RT-PCR and serological diagnostic of the arbovirosis (dengue, CHIKV and Zika).

Dr Villar is a Medical Doctor, microbiologist and clinical epidemiologist. He is a Professor of Medicine School, Director of Clinical Epidemiology Research Center and Infectious Diseases and Director of the AEDES network. Dr. Villar has extensive experience in research and has been PI in epidemiological and clinical studies in areas consistent with the network that he leads, in which the different lines of research including seroprevalence and transmission dynamics studies, cohorts assessing risk factors and prognostic for severity and mortality and clinical trials for developing dengue vaccine, virological surveillance to predict outbreaks, implementation and impact assessment and development of new rapid diagnosis test and burden of diseases |

Role: Principal Investigator Coordinator of the study site. He is charged to conduct objective research: building a prospective cohort to:establish, describe and quantify the absolute and relative risk of microcephaly and other congenital abnormalities (Zika Congenital Syndrome) in fetuses and infants born to mothers infected with ZIKV during pregnancy; In this study site it will enroll 100 pregnant women (first and second trimester) per month from the public health network. Dr Villar will work with the central research team of ZIKAlliance to ensure complete adherence to the protocol and interacts with the other groups as well as the delivery of reports and results. He is responsible for generating independent, high quality, and reproducible results. He also is responsible for the management and integrity of the conduct, and reporting of the research project and for managing, monitoring, and ensuring the integrity of any collaborative relationships. Additionally, he is responsible for the direction and oversight of compliance, financial, personnel, and other related aspects of the research project and for coordination with central administration personnel to assure research in is conducted in accordance with International, National regulations and University and IDAMS policies and procedures.
