The Institut de Recherche pour le Dévelopement (IRD) is a non‐profit government‐funded public organization under the joint supervision of the Ministries of Research and Foreign Affairs. The IRD’s general missions are to conduct research and training with a view to promoting economic, social and cultural development in the Southern Countries. Research performed in IRD covers a wide range of areas and disciplines and addresses major development challenges such as human health, food security, climate change, water resources, vulnerability and social inequality. IRD consists of about 56 research laboratories, operating jointly with academic partners in France, in the French overseas territories and in 35 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Mediterranean Basin. About 40% of the 2363 IRD's staff (including 854 researchers) is based in Southern countries. IRD has been involved as partner or coordinator in about 80 FP7 projects jointly run with Southern partners and based on an interdisciplinary approach. MIVEGEC (http://www.mivegec.ird.fr/fr/) is a joint research unit bringing together over 100 staff research scientists from the IRD, the CNRS and the University of Montpellier with specific interests on the Ecology and Evolution of Infectious Diseases. Researchers at MIVEGEC publish an average of 170 peer‐reviewed scientific papers per year in different areas of vector biology and evolution, the ecology of host‐pathogen interactions, tropical medicine and public health. It hosts a WHO collaborating center for for insecticide evaluation in public health, the Leishmania National Reference Center, the Centre de Recherche en Ecologie et Evolution du Cancer(CREEC, http://www.creec.fr/), and the Centre National de Référence sur les Vecteurs (CNEV,http://www.cnev.fr/).

Role in the Consortium |
WP: 6 Vectors & vector control |
Task 6.1 : Identification of ZIKV vectors Task 6.2 : Vector competence |
|
Subtask 6.1.1: Epidemic vectors Subtask 6.1.2: Bridge vectors and enzootic transmission Subtask 6.2.1: Mosquitoes from endemic/epidemic regions |
|
Role: Task Leader (6.1) Task 6.1: C. Paupy will manage the task and the IRD/MIVEGEC team 1 Subtask 6.1.1: C. Paupy will collect mosquitoes around autochthonous ZIKV cases in Metropolitan France to identify vector species involved. ‐ Subtask 6.1.2: IRD Team 1 will examine wild mosquitoes collected in rural and natural environments of Gabon with special emphasis at interface with forested areas. To identify reservoirs and pathogens in enzootic cycles, he will develop a non‐invasive method based on the examination of freshly‐collected engorged suckling flies. This approach will be validated experimentally by infection of flies in BSL3 (Montpellier) and in field conditions in Gabon. Task 6.2: IRD team 1 will assess the vector competence of Ae. albopictus and Ae. aegypti from Gabon to ZIKV virus. Mosquitoes will be collected as immature stages and reared to adults. Experimental infections with two genotypes of ZIKV (Asian and African) will be performed and susceptibility to ZIKV will be measured with common vector competence indices (mosquito midgut infection, viral dissemination to secondary mosquito tissues, and transmission with virus detected in mosquito saliva). |
