What work do you do related to Zika – and to Zikalliance?
[ENG] I’m an ID medical doctor and in my practice I see patients with a range of infectious conditions, including Zika, Dengue and Chikungunya. I’m also a researcher, currently working in the ZIKAlliance project at University of Sao Paulo. I coordinate activities in regulatory issues, recruitment and participant follow-up, and I’m in constant communication with investigators in healthcare units and the at the lab.
[POR] Sou médica infectologista e cuido de pacientes com doenças infecciosas, inclusive Zika, Dengue e Chikungunya. Além disso sou pesquisadora, e atualmente estou envolvida no projeto ZIKAlliance pela Universidade de São Paulo. Eu coordeno as atividades regulatórias, de recrutamento e acompanhamento de pacientes, e estou em constante contato com as equipes das unidades de atendimento e do laboratório.
How many suspected and confirmed cases of Zika have you seen in your area of enrolment?
[ENG] In Santos municipality 14 cases were notified in 2017 (up to August) and 36 cases were notified in 2016.
[POR] No município de Santos em 2017 tivemos 14 casos notificados até agosto, e em 2016 tivemos 36 casos.
How many sites do you enrol patients in?
[ENG] We are currently working with 7 units, planning to expand to additional 5 units.
[POR] Estamos no momento trabalhando com 7 unidades em Santos, com planos de expandir para mais 5 unidades.
How many patients have you enrolled to date?
[ENG] So far 49 participants have been enrolled in our sites.
[POR] Incluímos 49 participantes até agora.
Has it been easy or difficult to enrol patients to this study, and why?
[ENG] With the sharp reduction in the number of Zika cases in Brazil, recruitment of participants has been increasingly difficult; we observed a reduced engagement among healthcare providers and lower interest among potential participants.
[POR] Com a abrupta redução do número de casos de Zika no país, o recrutamento de participantes para o estudo tem se tornado mais difícil; observamos uma redução do engajamento dos profissionais de saúde e uma redução do interesse da população no assunto.
Do people in your enrolment area care about Zika, and what do you do to communicate with them?
[ENG] General population, and pregnant women in particular, are interested in Zika. However, the level of concerns around this topic has been reduced in 2017. We’ve been working with dissemination of the study in our recruitment units, emphasizing the altruistic nature and potential to contribute to science. Whenever possible, we also combine our activities with education and prevention programs in the enrollment sites.
[POR] A população, em especial as gestantes, tem preocupação com a doença. Entretanto, o nível de preocupação com esse tema foi reduzido em 2017. Temos trabalhado com a divulgação do estudo nas unidades de recrutamento, enfatizando o caráter altruísta de ser um participante de estudo e o potencial de ajudar o progresso da ciência. Também tentamos conciliar nossas atividades com programas de educação e prevenção.
Why did you want to participate in ZIKAlliance?
[ENG] Because the study is fascinating. This study will contribute to a deeper understanding of Zika virus infection, and will quantify the risk of congenital malformations associated with the disease, as well as its determinants. From a scientific point of view, it is a priviledge to take part in the generation of such important knowledge. It is our duty to contribute to the improvement of care of people affected by this infection.
[POR] Porque o estudo é fascinante. Ele vai possibilitar uma compreensão muito mais profunda da infecção pelo vírus Zika, com a quantificação do risco de malformações congênitas associado à infecção, bem como seus determinantes. Do ponto vista científico, é um privilégio participar da produção de um conhecimento tão importante. Do ponto de vista humano, é nosso dever contribuir com a melhoria do cuidado a pessoas afetadas por esta doença.
What do you consider the biggest challenge(s) to participating in this project?
[ENG] I think the biggest challenge is to run the study in settings with no prior experience in clinical research, such that all training of healthcare providers has to be done for the first time, while also fulfilling the ongoing clinical demands. Fortunately, we have been able to overcome this problem thanks to the investigators’ motivation and enthusiasm.
[POR] Acho que o maior desafio é realizar o estudo em locais onde não existe experiência prévia em pesquisa clínica, sendo necessário fazer um treinamento global dos profissionais, e ainda “competir” com as atividades assistenciais que naturalmente ocorrem nas unidades de saúde. Felizmente, é possível contornar esse problema com a motivação e entusiasmo dos profissionais.
So far, what would you say is the best thing about being part of this project?
[ENG] It has been a unique experience, for the theoretical and practical learning, and especially for the study team whom I have the opportunity to work with.
[POR] Tem sido uma experiência única, pelo aprendizado teórico e prático, e principalmente pela equipe do estudo com quem tenho a oportunidade de conviver.
Where do you think we are in understanding and fighting Zika in five years’ time? And what do we need to do to get there?
[ENG] We have already made outstanding progress, and additional studies with the potential to further clarify Zika infection are currently underway. The fight against Zika depends on the efforts of the scientific community and the general population, as well as of the public administrators and government.
[POR] Já fizemos muitos progressos e temos muitos estudos em andamento, que deverão nos próximos anos gerar conhecimento mais completo sobre a doença. A luta contra a doença depende de esforços da comunidade científica, da população, e também de gestores e governantes.
